Terms of use

These terms are short because the deal is simple. Walked It is a free walking diary. Use it kindly, look after yourself out there, and we will look after the service.

The app is a diary, not a safety device

Walked It records where you have been. It is not a navigation tool, a rescue beacon or a substitute for judgement. Phones run out of battery, GPS drifts in bush and gorges, and tracks close, flood and slip. Before you head out, check conditions and alerts with the Department of Conservation or the landowner, watch the forecast, and tell someone where you are going. Decisions about routes, rivers, weather and turning back are yours. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or harm arising from your use of the app or from relying on anything in it, including trail details that have gone stale since they were gathered.

Photos you share

If you tick the share box on a photo, you keep ownership of it. You grant us a non-exclusive licence to store the photo, review it, and display it anonymously in the app for other walkers. You can withdraw a photo at any time by unticking the box, or by deleting your account, and we will stop displaying it. Only share photos you took yourself or otherwise have the right to share.

Community content rules

Every shared photo is reviewed by a person before other walkers can see it, and anyone can report a photo from inside the app. Reports are also reviewed by a person. Keep shared photos to the walk itself:

• nothing offensive, violent, sexual or otherwise objectionable
• no identifiable people without their consent
• nothing that intrudes on private property or private life

We may decline or remove any photo, and may close accounts that repeatedly break these rules. There is no fee, so there is nothing to refund.

The service

Walked It and its backup service are provided as-is, free of charge, with no warranty. We work to keep the service up and your backups safe, but we cannot promise uninterrupted service, and we may change or discontinue features. Your diary always lives on your phone first, and the app's export tools give you a full copy at any time, so no server change can take your records away from you. You can delete your account and all server data whenever you like, in the app or at the account deletion page.

The legal bits

These terms are governed by New Zealand law. If we update them, the date above changes and material changes will be flagged in the app or on this site. If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.
